The Chicago Stars have announced a new addition to the team, Anna Gasper from Benfica. The Stars have now signed on the midfielder for at least through the 2027 NWSL season.
With her experience playing in one of the top women’s leagues in Portugal, Gasper is sure to bring her skills to the table.
The 29-year-old has been acquired for an undisclosed transfer fee. She arrives with an impressive resume that includes four consecutive Portuguese league titles with Benfica and a history of successfully competing in the UEFA Women's Champions League.
"We're thrilled to add Anna's experience to our roster," said Chicago Stars President Karen Leetzow in a club statement. "She brings a strong competitive mentality and a track record of success at some of Europe's top clubs. Beyond her accomplishments on the field, Anna is a person whose values align with what we want the Chicago Stars to represent."
Gasper spent the past three seasons with Benfica, where she helped win four straight league championships and multiple domestic cup titles. Throughout her career she has made over 100 appearances while playing in Germany, Austria, and Portugal.
For Chicago, the signing continues the active summer transfer window as the club looks to build momentum after coming back from the World Cup break for the second half of the NWSL season.
The Stars recently earned themselves a 3-2 victory over the Utah Royals on July 5th and looks to add more experienced international players to the roster.
Gasper expressed her excitement about joining the Stars as she prepares to make the transition from European soccer to the NWSL.
"I'm really happy to join Chicago Stars FC and to start this new chapter in my career," Gasper said in a statement. "It's an honor to become part of this club, and I'm already excited to get to know my teammates, the fans and, of course, the amazing city. I can't wait to get to work and do everything possible to help the team reach its goals and compete at the highest level in the NWSL."
The addition gives Chicago an extra boost as the club continues its climb up the NWSL standings. With championship experience in Europe and a history of competing at some of the highest levels, Gasper is more than qualified to join and elevate the team.
The Chicago Stars hope Gasper's experience in European soccer will help strengthen the midfield as the team looks to continue turning this season around.
