LA Galaxy (3W‑4D‑4) earned a 1‑1 draw against Vancouver Whitecaps FC (8W‑1D‑1L) on May 2, at Dignity Health Sports Park.
Although the Galaxy earned a point against a Whitecaps side that had lost just once match in MLS play, they continue to struggle at home, winless since Feb. 28, 2026, when they defeated Charlotte FC.
“We were ahead for most of the game, and we were in a position to win it,” Galaxy Head Coach Gregg Vanney said. “I was proud of the guys in the battle, the fight, and getting the go-ahead goal and we got to see it out. That's where we fell short on what I thought was a foul we didn't need to commit against a sideline with a player facing backwards.”
The only goal for LA came from Galaxy forward Joseph Paintsil following a costly turnover by Vancouver Whitecaps FC goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka, which allowed Galaxy midfielder Lucas Sanabria to drive toward goal and set up the Ghanaian for the opener.
Paintsil currently has four goal contributions in 2026 with two goals and two assists.
The Whitecaps were given a golden opportunity in the 80th minute after Galaxy defender Miki Yamane committed a foul from behind to give them a late set piece chance.
The unnecessary foul would cost LA its lead after a well-placed ball from Whitecaps midfielder Sebastian Berhalter’s cross found Mathías Laborda for the header to equalize the match.
“In this first half, there was times when we're doing a lot of chasing and everybody's putting the work in,” Galaxy Midfielder Justin Haak. “Once we regain the ball, it's a little bit more difficult just because we've been defending for so long. So, you see more turnovers and that's why we found ourselves in the position we were today.”
The match consisted of a physical battle with both teams combining for 28 total fouls with 10 yellow cards given by the referee.
Paintsil drew a game-high seven fouls, repeatedly finding himself on the receiving end of heavy challenges.
“The only thing frustrating me is just to kick me and try to make a foul for me to always complain and all this kind of thing,” Paintsil said. “The more I get a little bit pissed, that's when I'm really out of the game. I just let it go, focus on the game, keep the game flowing and just try to help the team. That is the most important thing for me."
The Galaxy will go on a three-match road trip, starting with their match against Atlanta United FC (3W-1D-7L) on May 9, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium at 6:30 p.m. CST.
