For midfielder Anna Gasper, joining Chicago Stars FC represents more than just the next stop in her professional career. It's the realization of a longtime dream.
After entering Saturday's match against Racing Louisville FC in the 78th minute, Gasper reflected on what it means to compete in the National Women's Soccer League.
"I was looking for the next step in my career, so it was always a dream of mine to play in the NWSL because, especially in Europe, it's called one of the best leagues in the world," Gasper said.
The German midfielder joined Chicago as the club looks to add depth and stability in the midfield during the second half of the season.
Head coach Martin Sjögren believes Gasper's skill set will make an immediate impact.
"Of course it's really nice to have her, and I think it's a player that will help us a lot," Sjögren said. "She's hardworking and covers a lot of ground. She's also really good on the ball. So with that said, she's going to give us a lot of things in central midfield."
Gasper's debut with the Stars comes at a time when the club has been searching for consistency while navigating injuries and lineup changes throughout the season.
Although Chicago fell 2-1 to Racing Louisville on Saturday, Gasper's introduction provided another opportunity for the coaching staff to evaluate how the midfielder fits into the team's plans moving forward.
As the Stars continue their push through the remainder of the NWSL season, both Gasper and the club hope her arrival can provide added stability in the midfield and help spark improved performances in the weeks ahead.
